Antique Victorian 18K Gold Amethyst & Rose Cut Diamond Halo Cluster Poison Ring. This outstanding antique compartment ring in glowing 18k yellow gold features an oval amethyst nestled within a conforming halo of fourteen rose-cut diamonds, a protuberant, beautifully hand carved floral gallery, matching carved shoulders that extend well back along its shank and a hinged secret compartment accessed via a thumb latch on one side of the face.
The amethyst is bright and limpid with lovely medium violet-purple tones, the diamonds are brilliant, sparkly and very nicely mounted with diagonal gold bars between each creating a kinetic pinwheel effect and adding to the display of reflected/refracted light and color. The amethyst measures 10.75 x 8.50-mm, an estimated 2.38 carats, the fourteen diamonds measure approximately 1.6-mm each with a combined carat weight of. 25 carats, and the ring's face measures 13/16 x 5/8-inches. In excellent condition, this fine circa 1860 ring tests positive for 18k gold, measures a size 6.25 (sizable) and weighs 10.3 grams. Despite their disquieting nickname, "poison, " or compartment rings, were rarely used to contain poison, and were most often used during the Victorian Era to hold religious relics or sentimental mementoes such as locks of hair or photographs.
